Victorian Arts Centre

A guided tour of this magnificent building is certainly a worthwhile experience. The Arts Centre site has always been associated with arts and entertainment and has previously been home to circus, theatre, roller and ice skating, cinema and dance.

After World War II it was decided that Melbourne needed a cultural centre. After many years of discussion, a master plan was approved in 1960, with Sir Roy Grounds as the chosen architect.

During the ensuing years, and to accommodate difficulties associated with the geology of the site, changes to the original plans were made and eventually the Arts Centre emerged as two buildings - now known as the Theatres Building and Hamer Hall.

Work commenced on the Theatres in 1973 and land was acquired for the Hamer Hall (formerly the Melbourne Concert Hall) in 1975.

The building now known as Hamer Hall opened in 1982. The Theatres Building opened two years later. The spire is the city's most familiar landmark. Tours can be arranged by calling 9281 8000

Parliament Buildings

PARLIAMENT HOUSE is one of Melbourne's best known landmarks. Facing the intersection of Spring and Bourke streets, the west facade of the building; sweeping steps, elegant lamps, grand colonnade, suggests solidity and strength.

Appearances are deceptive. Parliament House is incomplete. The generous vision of nineteenth century architect, Peter Kerr, has not been fully realised. The story of Parliament House is one of staged construction and architectural ambition thwarted.

Considered to be the finest parliament buildings outside London, built with stone from the Grampians. Guided tours Mon-Fri at 10am, 11am 12 noon, 2pm, 3pm & 3.45pm.
